Summer is headed our way, with the warmer temps and sunny days, most of us will experience an increase in our energy bills. To avoid the sticker shock of summer utility bills I have some really simple ways that you can reduce your energy bills this summer and all year long!
1. Replace your incandescent bulbs with super bright LEDs–
Number one on my list is replacing your incandescent bulbs with GE LED Smart Energy bulbs. I have seen a huge decrease in our energy bills all year long by replacing all the light bulbs in our house with these bulbs. I was able to pick up enough light bulbs to replace all the ones in my house at Sam’s Club for a great price.
1 LED Bulb lasts as long as 15 traditional incandescent bulbs and uses 80% less energy, all while still giving you the soft white light of an incandescent bulb. You can find out just how much energy you can save by checking out this energy consumption calculator on GE’s website.
Saving money on my energy bills each month has become something of an obsession lol! Here are my other favorite ways to save:
2. Turning off the lights when you leave a room-
I don’t know about you, but my kids are the masters of leaving every light on in our house. I swear they just around from room to room making sure the lights are always on. I run around after them making sure they are always off, it’s a vicious cycle! Teach your kids to be responsible with energy, not just to preserve your checking account, but to preserve our planet’s resources.
3. Programmable thermostat-
I have had one of these for years and never put it to use until my husband and I decided we were done paying sky high electric bills. I started playing around with the setting and came up with a perfect schedule for our family that is keeping us comfortable all year long while cutting our bills significantly.
4. Beware of the vampires-
Electronics that are not in use but are still plugged in are actually still sucking power, this includes TV’s, chargers & computers. Even when they are turned off they still draw standby power. If you don’t want the hassle of unplugging them every time you turn them off, at least make sure that you unplug them at night before you go to bed. This simple act can save you 5-10% on your energy costs yearly!
5. Use your big appliances in the evening-
Do your laundry after dinner, run your dishwasher before you go to bed and wait until after 7 to fire up your oven or stove for dinner. Waiting until it’s cooler outside to use these appliances will keep your AC from having to work in overdrive all day to keep up with the extra heat those items create. Also in the summer, some counties will charge a higher premium on electricity used during the day.
By implementing these simple tips, you are sure to be pleasantly surprised with a nice reduction in your energy bill. It becomes addicting, I used to dread when the power bill came in the mail, now I get excited to see our strategies pay off each month. Small changes make a huge difference!
