Last week I came home from a long day of field tripping with the kids to an incredibly funky smell in my kitchen. Like really funky. The nose went to work trying to find the source of the funk. In no time at all I found out the smell was coming from my garbage disposal. Yuck! One of my kids had left some food in there and it had just been sitting there stinking up my house for who knows how long. This wasn’t the first time this had happened, my teens are the primary dish doers in my house and while they do a pretty good job most of the time, there are days when they just forget that they need to run the garbage disposal.
Fortunately I have an old trick that a friend’s mom taught me years ago when I was just a newlywed. She was a very 50’s woman and all about the housekeeping tips and tricks. One of the best things she taught me how to make were garbage disposal tablets. These little tablets are perfect for those not so fresh days when your teens (or husband) leave the leftovers sitting in the sink for hours.
They are super easy to make and store and they are kinda pretty too Slice oranges into mini wedges and place in an ice cube tray, fill the tray with vinegar and freeze for 24 hours. After they are completely frozen, pop them out of the tray and store them in a ziploc bag in the freezer.
When you need to freshen up your disposal just run a little water, add some baking soda and drop one of these suckers in there and let it sit for about five minutes, then run some water and your disposal and you will have a clean and fresh garbage disposal again
