We all know that parenting can be a stressful job, but I don’t think I felt pure stress until I became the parent of a teenage driver. My heart even beat a little bit faster just typing that sentence, lol. Since I have enough stress in my life, I am always happy to find something that can help save my sanity, or at least what’s left of it!
Seriously, just the thought of your teen behind the wheel of a car can be stress inducing so the car shopping part should be a breeze, right? Well, it usually doesn’t happen like that, and by the time you’re done, and your teen is taking happy selfies with their new ride, you may have completely lost your mind! Luckily, this doesn’t have to be the case. Here are some simple tips to handle car shopping with your teen without losing your mind.
Lay down the law!
Your teen may try to bargain or negotiate with you through this process, so it’s important that you set some rules and stick to them. I suggest setting a budget from the start so your teen knows what to expect and what they should be looking for. It’s also important to explain the safety standards that you require in a car for your teen. Anything that you feel is important to agree on ahead of time should be discussed and decided together before you do any actual car shopping. This will minimize any disagreements later on that can lead to stressful moments.
Do your homework!
Parents and teens both need to do the research before buying a car. Are certain models known to be safer in the event of an accident? Have there been any recalls on any of the cars that you are interested in? Is this car a gas guzzler or expensive when it comes to repairs? Don’t even think about making such a big commitment without doing your homework and knowing what you are getting into!
