I have lived in Georgia for 10 years now and I still can’t get over how much pollen is in the air during spring. If you have never experienced the wonder that is a southern spring, then let me tell you that you are not missing a darn thing. The air is so heavy with pollen during these times that everything is coated in yellow, it looks like snowfall some days and you can just feel it circulating in your lungs. Going outside is something that is avoided at all costs during pollen season and most of walk around with watery eyes and runny noses for the majority of the springtime.
After the 10th year of suffering and watching my children suffer from the daily pollen blizzard I decided to talk to some holistic healing types and do some research to find out exactly how I can naturally combat allergies. I was surprised by what I found. I started implementing these strategies at the beginning of spring and put them to the test on a trip to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Shockingly enough, my kids didn’t have any issues this year, no sneezing, no watery eyes and no runny noses. It’s amazing what some natural medicine can accomplish! 2. Bee Pollen & Honey
This is kind of a hair of the dog philosophy lol! The fact is that local bee pollen and honey can work wonders when you are trying to battle allergies. The caveat here is that it must be pure, raw honey that is local to your area, as close as you can get. The cute little bears of honey at the grocery store aren’t going to cut it. Search for a farmers market in your area or sometimes a local produce co-op will have honey as well.
3. Onions –
Onions have been proven to reduce symptoms in hay fever over and over again. By ingesting just 1/4 of an onion daily gives your body enough of the bioflavanoid quercetin, proven to reduce itchy, water eyes and hay fever.
4. Netti Pot-
I know the thought of pouring water up your nose isn’t very appealing, but if you are like me, you get to the point where you will try anything to get relief! I use a netti pot on the days that the pollen is especially heavy or I have been out doors for along time. The truth is that nothing can get those stubborn pollen particles out of your nose like a saline netti pot wash.
5. Apple Cider Vinegar-
Drink about two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in an 8 oz. glass of water once every day during allergy season to help to slow the production of the histamines that create allergic reactions. If you find this hard to do, try mixing it in a pineapple smoothy to cut the bitter taste.
