My family and I recently decided to take on a new family mission, to become Hunger Heroes. What exactly is a Hunger Hero? So glad you asked! A Hunger Hero is someone that can’t stand to see a child go hungry, that wants to give back to their community and help fight hunger in a big way. We heard the call and are stepping up to help along with Tyson, KRAFT and Sam’s Club and their Hunger Heroes Campaign! The Hunger Heroes campaign wants to turn families into superheroes! With every Sam’s Club purchase of a Tyson 5lb bag of fully cooked chicken nuggets, a 12 pack of KRAFT macaroni and cheese or Capri-Sun 40 pack in August, Tyson & KRAFT will donate a helping of nourishment to the fight against hunger.
My family and I decided it was time to embrace our inner superhero and find a way to help fight hunger in our own community. We started donating food and making lunches for our local food bank. Every Monday we spend an afternoon putting together lunches for kids in need and then drop them off. This Monday was no exception, we made our sandwiches, but this time we had some extra treats to donate. Along with our sandwiches we brought chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese and Capri-Sun pouches.
Of course my 3 year old decided she needed to dress for the occasion. We had been talking a lot about being heroes in our community so she asked me to make her a superhero cape and mask that she could wear when we made the sandwiches and delivered them, of course I couldn’t say no so I pulled out some fabric and my sewing machine and went to work. Now she feels like a real hero saving the day!
Do you have what it takes to become a Hunger Hero? It only takes a few hours out of your week to change your community for the better! I’ll even help you get started by showing you how to make a super easy superhero cape so you too can be a Hunger Hero (and look good while doing it)!
Materials needed:
2 yards of fabric (1 for the cape, 1 for the lining)
Coordinating thread
Sew-on velcro
Fusible fabric sheets (optional)
Instructions:
Use this Superhero Cape Neckline template for the neckline. Place template on fold of fabric, pin in place.
Using a yard stick or ruler extend the line of the cape along the template (see below)
Cut both yards of fabric
Place the fabric right side together and pin
Stitch all the way around, leaving a 4 inch opening at the bottom of the cape for turning. Turn right side out and press seams. Top stitch all the way around.
Sew velcro onto the neck tabs of the cape
Optional, design a decal (I used PicMonkey to make the Hunger Heroes decal on her cape) and print out on fusible fabric sheets and follow manufactures directions for attaching to the cape.
That’s it! You now have no excuse not to get out there and be a Hunger Hero in you community!
