Children and hunger. 2 words that should never go together. No child should ever have to go hungry, but it happens every single day. In my city 21% of the children are at risk for going hungry. That means that over 700,000 children in Atlanta alone don’t know where their next meal will be coming from or even if they will be getting a meal that day. My heart is broken. I’m holding back tears. No child should have to go to bed with a rumbling tummy.
To fight this epidemic of childhood hunger I have teamed up with Wal-Mart as they launch Fight Hunger. Spark Change, a nationwide campaign calling on the public to get involved in the fight against hunger. The campaign will provide $3.7 million in grants to participating Feeding America food banks and local partner agencies that provide hunger relief to millions of people in need of food assistance.
Wal-Mart’s campaign is a great start to make sure every child has a full belly, but there is more that needs to be done. Here’s what you can do to help!
Volunteer – almost every community has a food bank or shelter that needs volunteers. My kids and I try to volunteer as often as we can. Whether it sorting or delivering food or answering phones, we jump in where we are needed.
Organize a food drive – get together with your mom’s group, church, or neighborhood and collect non-perishable food. have a contest to see who can collect the most. You can probably get a local business to donate a prize to the winner 🙂
Stock up on BOGOs! So many stores have buy one get one sales. If you notice an item that usually buy is BOGO, grab an extra to donate to your food bank.
These are great ways to get involved in your community and make sure that no child goes hungry!
Guess what?! You can help right now. Seriously, you can help this very second without even changing out of your super comfy PJs. From September 15 through October 5, you can visit www.walmart.com/fighthunger to cast one vote per day that will help direct grants to participating Feeding America food banks and local partner agencies across the country. The 50 winning food banks will each receive a $60,000 grant. It’s so easy, there’s no excuse not to do it right now 🙂
Don’t forget to RSVP for the #Vote2FightHunger Twitter party on September 30th @ 1:00 pm EST to learn more about ending hunger in your community!
