When most people think of Orlando, Florida, they usually think of the big Florida attractions – Disney, Epcot, SeaWorld, and other big vacation destinations. However, the city, and surrounding area, have so much more to offer and plenty of things that won’t break the bank. Ranging from historical to quirky, here are 7 free things to do in Orlando.

Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts

Zora Neale Hurston played a major part in the Harlem Renaissance as an anthropologist and writer. Her novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, influenced many modern writers. The Zora Neale Hurston National Museum commemorates her legacy by showcasing a variety of work from African American artists with a different focus every three to four months. Each new exhibit begins with a reception that is free and open to the public.

The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida

The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida is showcases both permanent and traveling exhibits, as well additional educational events and programs. They also have a bully prevention program aimed at middle school students, Upstanders: Stand Up to Bullying, that uses stories of Rescuers from the Holocaust to teach students what to do when they witness bullying.

 Fort Christmas Historical Park

On December 25, 1837, during the Second Seminole Indian War, US Army Soldiers and Alabama Volunteers gathered to construct a fort. Today, visitors can tour a replica of the fort as well as other historical homes and learn about the history of the Seminole Indian Wars.

 Flea World/Fun World

Located at 4311 Orlando Ave, Sanford, FL, Flea World has over 1500 vendors offering everything from antiques to fresh produce and animals. While there are plenty of items to buy, just exploring the market can be exciting. And, after the adults have their fun, the kids can take a visit to Fun World, a free “mini fair” for kids.

 Spook Hill

While “Gravity Hills”, places where cars are said to defy gravity, can be found across the country, usually via word of mouth, Spook Hill is officially recognized and designated with a sign explaining the legend behind the hill and how to experience the full effect of defying gravity.

Orlando Brewing

Orlando Brewing, the only organic-certified brewery in Florida, offers free brewery tours at 6pm every day except for Monday, with additional exceptions made for the 30th of each month and special events like Oktoberfest.

 Orlando Children’s Library

The Orlando Children’s Library offers many events free to the public every week, with special events throughout the year, typically aimed at children from kindergarten to 5th grade.
