Not only is my car essential to our daily lives, it is completely essential to my homeschool. That giant, gas guzzling monster is responsible for a majority of my kids education. Without my beast of a car we couldn’t travel, and traveling is a huge part of my children’s education right now.
Over the past year we have discovered a passion for traveling and all the educational benefits that come with it! In august we made a cross country trip from Atlanta to California. This is a trip that I had been putting off for 9 years! I really didn’t have any desire to take 6 kids on a road trip across the country, who in their right mind would ever want to do that? However, my brother was getting married and it was time to man up and make the trek. I was totally prepared to heavily sedate myself or the children 😉 however, like always, my children completely surprised me with their ability to travel without incessant whining, tantrums and “are we there yet?”.
They loved traveling! They loved the adventure, they loved looking for crazy little places to stop for some leg stretching and learning. We visited the St. Louis Arch, half a dozen science museums, saw the hot air balloon races, almost made it to the camel races ( we are so doing this next year!), walked through a ghost town, saw Lake Tahoe, visited a missile silo and “launched” a missile, and so much more! I swear the kids learned more in that trip than the entire previous school year!
Without my car, our homeschool would be dull and adventureless. I certainly don’t want that, so I will continue hauling my brood from city to city, museum to museum for as long as I can. This is why my big beast of a car is my homeschool essential!
