1. Gulf Shores
Alabama is home to one of the country’s best beach cities. White sand and crystal blue waters have people flocking to Gulf Shores year round to enjoy the little piece of heaven that sits at the state’s southern most edge. While you are there you can visit historic Ft. Morgan, the quaint Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo or the 7,000 acre Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge.
2. Birmingham
Birmingham is a city rich in culture and history. Founded in the late 1800’s Birmingham was the leading producer of iron and steel and later came to play a pivotal role in the civil rights movement. Now it stands out as a sophisticated, diverse city to rival any big city, while still maintaining it’s famous southern hospitality.
The city’s biggest and best attractions for families include the Birmingham Zoo, McWane Science Center and the Birmingham Civil Rights Center.
3. Huntsville
Located in the heart of the Tennessee Valley in North Alabama, Huntsville is known as “The Rocket City” because of it’s close ties to the U.S. Space Missions. It is home to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, the most comprehensive U.S. manned spaceflight hardware museum in the world. In addition to viewing the extensive collection of space travel artifacts, families will enjoy astronaut training simulators and the impressive SpaceDome IMAX and National Geographic theater.
Other fun Huntsville activities include The Huntsville Botanical Gardens, The Early Works Children’s Museum and The Sci-Quest Science Center.
4. Mobile
If you are looking for a city that is overflowing with southern charm and hospitality, look no further than Mobile, Alabama. Once called the Paris of the South, Mobile is a cultural hotspot with the right mix of fun, sophistication and authentic southern charm.
Top attractions in Mobile include The U.S.S Alabama Battleship, The Audubon Bird Sanctuary (FREE), Alligator Alley, The Estuarium at Dauphin Island Sea Lab and The Mobile Museum of Art.
5. Montgomery
History buffs will love the deep historical roots in Montgomery. From the Civil War to to the Civil Rights Movement, Montgomery was often front and center and played a key role in many historical events. If you are looking to be immersed in the history of Montgomery, be sure to visit The State Capitol building, where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office as President of the Confederate States of America in 1861 and followed, nearly a century later, by the Selma-to-Montgomery civil rights march that ended with a inspiring speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Other must see attractions include The Alabama Shakespeare Festival, The Civil Right Memorial and Center and The Rosa Park Library and Museum.
